I watched Rabbit-Proof Fence a few years ago — it was the first I'd heard of The Stolen Generations. Pretty much the same injustice was perpetuated here against our native population, as well. 🙁
White settlers really don't have the proudest of pasts in that regard, do they? I'm just glad our parliament actually stood up and said sorry at last.
Yeah, Native Americans are still pretty damn disenfranchised. I visited the Pima Indian Reservation when my parents were living in Pheonix, AZ, and poverty? They've got it. 🙁
Good point – white settlers don't have the proudest of presents in that regard. Which is why I was so glad to see the apology delivered. All the caterwauling over the last ten years that this generation of white people had nothing to do with taking children from their parents doesn't wash. We're happy to take the advantages and privileges our ancestors bought us, but we don't want to shoulder the icky parts as well? 👿
