Today I realised — entirely out of nowhere — that I can't remember my student number any more.
I don't know why this surprised me. It has been an entire decade since I graduated from uni,1 after all, and it's not like I've needed to know said number even once since then. But that number marked everything to do with my days for so long, I quoted it so often, I scrawled it on papers and assignments and theses, that it felt like it was part of my DNA.
And now I don't even remember when I forgot it.
(I wonder what the memory cells dedicated to remembering my student number have now been put to use remembering in its place?)
- actually, this month marks the decade – hey, lookit that [↩]

LOL – rationally, I know it must have featured 95 at the start there — but even that doesn't sound quite right any more! Alas, it is lost in the mists of time. Luckily, I don't think I'll need it again

Oh God, you're right! Now life is going to go and find some pressing need for me to know my student number and I'm not going to be able to supply it and DOOMED, I AM DOOMED

Keep in mind that i'm only an amateur doctor but i think you may be suffering from minutiaesia, in my opinion this is not caused by memory cells being reassigned but by the neglected cells possibly falling down the back of your neck or holidaying elsewhere in your body. If you do need to recover these cells i would suggest doing some medical headstands…

LOL – so, what you are saying, is that my student number is in my … ankles?

You still remember yours? And we're the same vintage and everything. I bow before your memory-fu.

Not in your ankles – the usual place for these things to end up is in your fingertips, which is why people are frequently able to sit down and blindly type things which are long since lost to their conscious minds…
