@Tessa: you haven't seen a spider in ages? I am so totally coming to live with you. I keep thinking of those spiders in the farside cartoon, spinning a web over the foot of a slippery dip.

@Jan: dude, sooooo not a golden orb weaver (although love the Be Careful on the Spider Identification Chart), but after googling I agree, not in truth a wolf spider. Don't know what spider it was, though - doesn't seem to be on the chart I just linked. Which is good news, eh? Not venomous or dangerous! Bloody enormous and hairy, though.

@Olivia: Thanks, I'll keep an eye out for it. I'm not sure anything will cure my spider nerves, though.

Hi, to overcome any negative feelings you might have against spiders I have written children's novel about the birth of a spider with only seven legs. If you google Olivia Eddy "The Hatchling" will appear in softcover or ebook form. I can only say that if you read this book you will learn about spiders as well as be entertained. I think it will give you a different perspective on them anyway. Kind regards.

It wouldn't be a wolf spider, silly. They don't spin webs in the air. Much more likely (especially where you are) to be an Orb-weaver spider: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orb-weaver_spider

Every time I've ever walked into one of their webs, they always scuttle away quickly. Not biters, them.

Still creepy though.

That's one thing I really don't miss about long hair - was never quite sure I'd checked the whole mane when it came to spidery encounters. Euch! Can't help thinking the spider is just sitting over the door frame, all "hehe, another suckah."

I haven't seen a spider in ages, and that's fiiiiine with me.
